I am entitled to a view.
Where are they now, the earth’s endless riches?
From 1815 to 1817, Maximilian, Prince of Wied-Neuwied, became the first European to explore the Mata Atlântica, the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil. His account 'Reise nach Brasilien' is regarded as an important zoological, ethnological and historical record of a habitat that has now shrunk to less than a quarter of its original size. A region that was opened up to accelerated economic development and colonization by the explorations of European scientists such as Maximilian, Prince of Wied-Neuwied. A process that, over the following 200 years has been accompanied by the destruction of natural habitats and the displacement and exploitation of indigenous populations.
This work is based on a dataset of 4,521 images published in 2024 in the paper 'Camera trap surveys of Atlantic Forest mammals: A dataset for analyses considering imperfect detection (2004–2020)' by Ingridi Camboim Franceschi, Rubem Augusto da Paixão Dornas, Isabel Salgueiro Lermen, Artur Vicente Pfeifer Coelho, Ademir Henrique Vilas Boas, Adriano Garcia Chiarello, Adriano Pereira Paglia, et al., and released under the Creative Commons BY 4.0 licence.
